Every challenge we face
is a chance to grow and
every new friendship we make
reminds us we are never truly alone
on this journey
About Us
Nicola, Sheila, Chris and Warick as trustees set up the Spirit of Tasman Bay Trust in 2007, after many years involvement with the Spirit of Adventure Trust.
Nicola was a past trainee, whilst Sheila, Chris and Warick were volunteer crew for more than 20 years.
Chris, Sheila and Warick are all recipients of the Spirit of Adventure Trust’s Top Gallant Award, awarded to those who give long and distinguished service to the organisation. Chris and Sheila are the first couple to have received the award,
In 2009 Sheila was the recipient of the Sail Training International Volunteer of the Year Award whilst speaking at their annual conference held in Istanbul that year.
Trainee Development
The Spirit of Adventure Trust aims to empower young New Zealanders to reach their full potential through the medium of the sea. During the voyages the trainees have the opportunity to learn, and develop from each other, qualities of independence, understanding and community spirit through the medium of the sea.
Although the trainees are learning how to sail the ship, the focus is on development of personal skills such as teamwork, leadership, co-operation, self confidence and communication. For some this is a life changing experience.
The Trust aims to give all people who sail an equal opportunity to achieve personal goals and to develop a sense of self worth and community spirit.
How You Can Help Support
The Spirit of Tasman Bay’s mission is to help local young people to raise the necessary funds to participate in a 10 day voyage.
Those eligible for help will be young people living in the Nelson/Tasman Districts.
